Operation Safe Driver

During the week of Oct. 18-24, 2015, law enforcement agencies throughout North America will increase traffic safety enforcement and education aimed at unsafe driving behaviors by both commercial motor vehicle drivers and car drivers.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Operation Safe Driver Week in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and support from industry organizations like the NWRA, focuses on improving the behavior of all drivers and provides educational and enforcement strategies to address risky driving behavior.

The top three warnings and citations issued to CMV drivers and passenger car drivers are:

1. Speeding
2. Failure to use a safety belt
3. Failure to obey traffic control devices

In October the waste industry has already experienced several fatal incidents involving both an industry worker and a passenger car driver. A waste industry worker not wearing a safety belt was killed when his truck rolled over and in a separate incident, the driver of a pickup truck was killed in a rear end collision with a stopped trash truck.
