What Canada’ B.C. Fleets Need to Know About M217
British Columbia’s Dashboard Cameras in Commercial Vehicles Act will require qualifying heavy commercial vehicles operating in the province to use a forward-facing dashboard camera while the vehicle is in operation.
Regardless of where a vehicle is registered, commercial carriers operating on British Columbia roads are within scope. This includes carriers based in other Canadian provinces and territories, as well as U.S. carriers traveling through B.C., including major transportation corridors such as the Alaska Highway.

Implementation Comes Next.
Bill M217 received Royal Assent on May 28, 2026 and is now law, but its requirements are not yet in force. The effective date will be established by regulation of the Lieutenant Governor in Council. For fleet operators, now is the time to identify affected vehicles, review existing camera hardware and determine what may be needed before the compliance timeline is established.
The Act applies to commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating over 11,793 kg (26,000 lbs) and establishes several core camera requirements:

- 1080p HD Minimum
- 72-Hour Local Retention
- Night Vision
- Owner/Lessee Installation & Maintenance
- Continuous Operation & Clear View
- Privacy Compliance
