In July, police said, the driver of a four-axle garbage truck was talking on his cell phone while driving when he ran a stop sign and quickly turned, causing an accident that killed his coworker, who was in the passenger seat.

Police tested the driver for drugs and alcohol and found none. Addition-ally, the truck was not overweight and the road conditions were not hazardous.

The day after the crash, court records stated that the dead man’s father called the police. He told them that his son had complained about the driver’s cell phone use while operating the garbage truck. The coworker had considered complaining to his boss, but didn’t because the driver was his friend.

After investigating, police found that the driver made eight calls and received two on his cell phone during his shift that day, including one that was in progress at the time of the crash.

Last week, the driver was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment, unlawful activity while using a cell phone, and several other traffic violations.
